Aurantia Chapter is proud to support Historic Preservation, Patriotism, and Education. One way of doing this is promotion via our local school to our students. DAR is able to offer many contests and awards to students of all ages that are willing to share their talents.


  • Preschool - 12th Junior American Citizens Poster, Stamp Design, Banner, Photographic Essay, Community Service, Poem, and Short Story Contests



    The JAC Contest is open to all students in preschool through high school, students in public, private, and parochial schools as well as in sanctioned homestudy programs, including those students who may be physically or mentally challenged or in gifted/talented programs in our local area. Youth groups may also participate, in our local area. This contest is conducted without regard to gender, race, religion, or national origin. Any school, organization, or person can participate in the JAC Contest using the materials provided free of charge, under the sponsorship of Aurantia Chapter. There is NO COST to participants.

  • 5th-8th American History Essay Contest



    Aurantia Chapter conducts the American History Essay Contest in public, private, and parochial schools, and registered home-study programs in our local area. Students in grades five through eight are encouraged to participate. Essays are judged for historical accuracy, adherence to topic, organization of materials, interest, originality, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and neatness.

    One winning essay from each of the four grades is sent for judging on the state level. The state will send one winning essay from each of the four grades to be judged on a regional level. The winning essay from each of the four grades will then be judged on the national level and the winners are announced.

    2011-2012 Topic: Pretend you were alive during the War of 1812 and had a friend who has become famous in history because of standing up for America during that exciting but dangerous time. Describe the person and how he or she stood up for America. Explain why it is important to honor such heroes when we celebrate the 200th Anniversary of the War of 1812.

    Title of Essay (to appear on the title page): "Young America Takes a Stand: The War of 1812"

  • 8th Good Citizenship and American History Awards



    History Award (outstanding work in History) and Good Citizenship Award (requirements based on 5 qualities)  Honor, Service, Courage, Leadership, Patriotism.

    Aurantia Chapter will award one Good Citizenship and one American History Award  to local middle schools.

  • 9th-12th Christopher Columbus Essay Contest



    2011-2012 Topic - Christopher Columbus: In his own time, in history, and today. Describe Christopher Columbus as he was understood in three different time periods: What did 15th century people think about his accomplishments? How did 19th century historians view him? How did Columbus, who had primitive ships and no computers or modern navigation equipment, affect our lives today?

    Title of essay (on the title page): “Christopher Columbus: In his own time, in history, and today"

  • 11th-12th ROTC Awards



    DAR awards are given to students in the ROTC programs in our local area, that have shown outstanding ability and achievement. They must demonstrate qualities of dependability and good character, adherence to military discipline, leadership ability, and a fundamental and patriotic understanding of the importance of ROTC/JROTC training.

  • 12th Good Citizens Award and Scholarship Contest



    Aurantia Chapter wishes to recognize and reward high school seniors, in our local area, who possess good citizenship qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism in their homes, schools, and communities. Each award is given on a merit basis including completion of a questionnaire, essay, scholastic record, and a letter of recommendation. United States citizenship is not required. National awards for the first, second, and third-place winners include scholarships to the school of their choice.
